V 5.5 SP5, build 5555, Monday, 6th May, 2024
- This release marks the return of a feature that was removed from T2000 back in June 2022 because admin privileges were required to use the feature at the time, which caused a bit of confusion and suspicion. That feature? You can ping a machine using the Dead or Alive tool once again! And the best part? You don't need admin powers to do it! To access the feature, simply choose Dead or Alive from the tools menu, and select ping from the menu that appears.
- This release also marks the official discontinuation of the Theseus2000 installer. From hear on out, Theseus2000 will only be available as a portable application.
V 5.5 SP4, build 5520, Tuesday, 30th April, 2024
- The program will no longer crash if the HTTP response finder can't process your input.
- If you don't specify a protocol in a tool that requires it, HTTPS will now be assumed.
- The program will no longer crash if you don't enter a number in the port field of CertiFire like you're supposed to.
V 5.5 SP3, build 5515, Friday, 1st March, 2024
- Fixed a bug where the new nameserver finder would crash the program if a network problem prevented nameservers from being found.
- Fixed a bug where the title bar wouldn't change when the nameserver finder was launched.
V 5.5 SP2, build 5509, Thursday, 29th February, 2024
- Old, dead references to seedy.gq have been replaced with new, shiny references to seedy.cc.
- The program will no longer crash and burn when CertiFire runs into an error.
- Those crappy, lossy MP3s have been replaced with super high quality, 96KHz, 32-bit PCM wave files!
- With regard to sound, a new program error sound, courtesy of the Numbertone SFZ from Rebecca Legowski has been added.
- There is now a dedicated tool for retrieving nameservers for a domain, bringing the number of tools to a sweet sixteen!
- Theseus2000 is now developed under the Seediffusion brand.
V 5.5 SP1, build 5505, Monday, 22nd January, 2024
- Tidies up the date formatting in both the WHOIS and CertiFire tools.
- Fixes a nasty bug where the program would crash if the new WHOIS API couldn't find any information for a given domain name.
V 5.5, build 5500, Friday, 19th January, 2024
- Windows 7 is now the minimum version of Windows required to run Theseus2000.
- The SSL certificate verifier tool will now work for virtually any kind of SSL/TLS enabled server, not just websites. This means IMAP/POP3 servers, encrypted TeamTalk servers, NVDA Remote servers, etc.
- The portable updater should no longer be flagged by every antivirus ever.
- The WHOIS tool is now powered by the Whois XML API. Goodbye, APILayer, you will not be missed!
- This new WHOIS API produces far too much output, so work has been done to filter the response down to the information you really want to know. This means you will now only see 6 things when you do a WHOIS query.
- The domain name.
- The domain's registration date.
- The last renewal date.
- The expiry date.
- The domain registrar.
- The email address for reporting abuse.
V 5.3, build 5300, Wednesday, 1st November, 2023
- The output from the SSL certificate verifier is now much clearer, with dates being presented in a much friendlier month/day/year format, rather than that clunky, confusing as hell format they were in before.
- CertiFire will now tell you how many days remain until an SSL cert expires.
- An option has been added into the main menu to convert an installed copy of T2000 into a portable one.
V 5.2 SP1, build 5205, Saturday, 16th September, 2023
- A bug where the program would crash if the web server identifier couldn't get any information on a website has been fixed.
- An issue where the t2000.zip file would not be removed during an automatic update when running a portable copy has been resolved.
V 5.2, build 5200, Friday, 8th September, 2023
- A new tool has been added that allows you to find out what web server software is being used by a website.
- A new tool has been added that will retrieve the source code of any website or page, and save it to a text file for easy viewing.
V 5.1 SP1, build 5105, Monday, 4th September, 2023
This small update addresses the sharing violation error that would appear when running the auto updater in portable mode.
V 5.1, build 5100, Saturday, 26th August, 2023
- The subnet calculator will no longer crash the program after trying to perform a calculation if you entered an invalid IPv4 or IPv6 address. Instead, it will now tell you that the IP address is in the wrong format and ask you to enter it again.
- Mastodon posts with your speed test results will now contain a link to the Theseus2000 website.
- If UI sounds are enabled, sounds will now be played to notify you of the progress of an automatic update. This was inspired by the KeyOp program from Day Garwood.
V 5.0, build 5000, Monday, 21st August, 2023
- V 5 is the first version of Theseus2000 to have a version name as well as a version number. The name of this version is Seaview.
- Theseus2000 can now be run as a fully portable program, allowing you to carry it around with you on an SD card or USB flash drive and use its many powerful features wherever you happen to be! This is a huge breakthrough for me as a software developer. I've always been so used to getting people to run installers in order to use my programs; portability and dealing with zip files always stressed me out. However, with a bit of help from Bryn, I was able to make Theseus2000 fully portable! An installer will still be offered, however, as of this version, the installer is deprecated, and the portable option is preferred.
- IP Geo will now work with hostnames. This means you no longer need to know a specific IPv4 or IPv6 address in order to get its geolocation data, you can simply enter a hostname/website domain name.
- For network admins and geeky hobbyists, a subnet calculator, inspired by Patrick Wilson and based on a code snippet from Quin, has been added. This allows you to get information about a subnet, such as the subnet mask, network and broadcast IP addresses, and the number of nodes that the subnet can support.
- The program will use a new variant of the startup sound first used in V 3.5.
- A few... well, a lot of long standing clutter issues in the source code have been cleaned up. This won't have any impact on you as the user, but as the developer, it'll make my life a hell of a log quicker and easier!
- UPX is now used when compiling the program in an effort to reduce its file size.
V 3.8, build 3800, Sunday, 30th July, 2023
- You now have the power to check any IPv4 or IPv6 address against the AbuseIPDB repository. This can be useful when diagnosing why you're being blocked from accessing a certain website by your internet service provider or internet security suite, or you're running into somewhat more CAPTCHA tests then usual. Has your IP, or the IP of the website you were just blocked from, been flagged?
- A bug where the title bar wouldn't change when you went back to the main menu from any other menu or tool within the program has been fixed.
V 3.7 Service Pack 1, build 3710, Sunday, 23rd July, 2023
The Golden IP Retriever will now ask you which public IP address you want to get. You can choose between IPv4 and IPv6.
V 3.7, build 3700, Wednesday, 19th July, 2023
- Fixes a bug where copying WHOIS data to the clipboard would just copy an HTTP response header rather than the actual WHOIS data.
- Resolves an issue where menu items and Y/N prompts would not be repeated for screen reader users if they pressed the wrong key.
V 3.6E (Service Pack 2), build 3666, Monday, 17th July, 2023
This release adds the ability for the Golden IP Retriever tool to perform a PTR lookup on your public IP and display both the IP address and the resulting PTR hostname, similar to an IRC client.
V 3.6E (Service Pack 1), build 3663, Sunday, 16th July, 2023
- Fixes a fatal Windows XP related bug where if you checked for updates in the main menu and tried to apply an update, the updater would generate an empty executable file, try to launch it, and promptly crash the entire program.
- Resolves an issue where the updater would not exit T2000 after launching the installer, causing access denied errors on Windows XP.
- Adds a one-time accuracy warning in the Net Speed tool, following reports of the tool picking the wrong server for testing, causing results to be far from what the user should expect them to be.
- The MAC address finder tool will now show you exactly who assigned the MAC address to the network card.
V 3.6E (Canada Day Release), build 3660, Saturday, 1st July, 2023
From PC to PC... to PC!
- Theseus2000 has a new tool that finds the DNS resolver servers your Windows installation is configured to use. This could be useful to know if you can't connect to certain websites or aren't able to use one or more internet applications.
- A bug in Windows Vista and higher where the auto updater would fail to launch the T2000 installer if your user profile had a space in its name should now be fixed.
V 3.6C, build 3650, Friday, 2nd June, 2023
T2000 now has the power to post your speed test results directly to the Mastodon service. This replaces the Twitter integration which was removed way back in V 3.1.
V 3.6C, build 3615, Friday, 26th May, 2023
The DNS lookup tool, introduced in the last release, will now let you choose a specific DNS record to find. The supported DNS record types are:
- A (Address)
- AAAA (IPv6 Address)
- MX (Mail Exchange)
- NS (Name Server)
- SOA (Start of Authority)
- TXT
The output from the WHOIS tool is now much nicer, with each piece of information now being on its own line, rather than everything being crammed on to one line without any white space or indentation whatsoever. This job was made a million times easier thanks to APILayer's WHOIS API. Goodbye, python-whois. You won't be missed!
V 3.6, Build 3600, Friday, 7th April, 2023
A new DNS lookup tool, powered by the API-Ninjas DNS Lookup API, has been added to Theseus2000. With this tool, you can enter an internet hostname and have a list of all DNS record types found for the hostname shown to you. Supported record types include:
- A
- AAAA
- CNAME
- TXT
- and many more.
V 3.5D, build 3535, Wednesday, 29th March, 2023
You now have the power to send your speed test results directly to the speedtest.net service and get a link to the results in PNG format copied to your clipboard. This will probably be more useful to those with eyesight than those without it, but hey, the option is there.
V 3.5C, build 3515, Wednesday, 22nd February, 2023
Finally, an update without any major crash fixes!
- You can now use Theseus2000 to find the MAC address of either your own machine or any other machine in your local area network. This can be used in case you need to weed out bad apples from your network, or you're just curious what MAC address each device in the network has. Of course, PC's and androids can do bad stuff too, not just apples :D
- The CertiFire and HTTP Response Finder tools will no longer kick you out to the tools menu after you run them. Instead, you'll now get the standard Y/N try again prompt seen in virtually all Theseus2000's other tools.
V 3.5 (Swedish Release), build 3500, Saturday, 4th February, 2023
For Sweden – With the Networking Suites!
- The Theseus2000 readme is now available in Swedish! In light of this, T2000 will now detect your system language when you open the readme from the main menu. If set to Swedish, the Swedish readme file, guide_sv.txt, will be opened instead of guide.txt, which is the English readme file.
- The HTTP response finder tool will no longer follow 301 redirects, allowing the 301 status code and explanation to be properly displayed instead of the tool just going where the 301 redirect takes it.
- A bug where pressing h in the tools menu to launch the Hostname to IP tool wouldn't work, requiring you to either press Shift H or press H with caps lock turned on, has been fixed.
- The updater will no longer crash the program if the connection is suddenly lost while an update is downloading.
- The updater will no longer crash the program if a certain step in the update checking process fails due to a server connection error.
- The updater is now fully unattended. This means that if you say yes to the initial new version prompt, the update will be automatically downloaded and applied, no user input required at all!
- Theseus2000 now has its own website!
V 3.2, build 3200, Thursday, 19th January, 2023
What? 3.2? Oh well, I guess all the Tada/Windows 3.1 jokes are useless now. :(
- A new certificate verifier tool has been added that will let you view the SSL/TLS certificate data for a website or other secure server.
- Support for the 429 Too Many Requests, 502 Bad Gateway and 504 Gateway Timeout responses has been added to the HTTP Response Finder tool.
- An issue where the auto updater would not automatically launch the installer on Windows 2000 and XP has been resolved.
- The about Theseus2000 prompt will now show the version of Windows on which the program is running.
V 3.1B, build 3105, Friday, 13th January, 2023
This is a quick fix update that resolves a bug where copying your HTTP Response Finder result didn't actually do anything, and adds a connecting prompt to HTTP Response Finder.
V 3.1 (Friday Thirteenth Update), build 3100, Friday, 13th January, 2023
Theseus2000 now has the same version number in 2023 as Microsoft Windows did in 1992!
- As of this release, Twitter support is no more! If you wish to share something on social media, use the copy to clipboard function included with virtually all T2000 tools.
- A new HTTP response finder tool has been added.
- The Test My Speed tool has been renamed to Net Speed.
- The concept of standard and speech output modes has been scrapped. Instead, an option to pipe the program's output through a screen reader is available in the settings that can either be enabled or disabled. It is disabled by default.
- A bug that would result in previously removed settings being readded when you reset the program back to defaults has been fixed.
V 3D Micro Update 1, build 3016, Wednesday, 23rd November, 2022
After being removed way back in version 1.3, Theseus2000 can check for updates on startup once again. Go to the settings menu to disable this option if you don't like it.
V 3D, build 3015, Saturday, 19th November, 2022
Theseus2000, Now in 3D!
- Theseus2000 will now check for updates a whole lot faster. No more waiting around for 5 minutes while the auto updater downloads a potentially unwanted installer file to your RAM!
- The speed test tool will now dynamically adjust its measurement units for your upload/download speeds. For instance, if your upload and/or download speed is 1000Mbps or higher, it will be shown in Gbps (gigabits per second), since there are 1000 megabits in a gigabit. And if you somehow still use a sub-1Mbps connection, your speeds will be shown in Kbps (kilobits per second). There are 1000 kilobits in 1 megabit.
- Thousand Mode, the setting that decides whether base-1000 or base-1024 is used when converting upload and download speeds from bits per second (bps) to the appropriate unit, has been removed. Base-1000 will always be used from now on. Base-1000 is a much easier system to work with; base-1024 should've died 20 years ago. Obey the IEC, people!
- The Golden IP Retriever has been trained to sniff out IPv6 addresses. This means, if you run the tool on a device that uses IPv6, it'll no longer sit there for ages and ultimately fail.
- Startup and shutdown sounds are now disabled by default to allow for faster program startup and shutdown. Don't worry, both sounds can still be enabled in settings.
- The auto updater will now tell you the size of an update, so you'll always know how much disk space you'll need to clear up before installing the update.
- The auto updater is now even more auto. Before, it would just download an update and leave you to install it yourself. Now, however, the installer will be launched in silent mode, allowing for the installation of updates to be fully unattended. This means that installation steps will be carried out automatically, with no user input needed!
V 3C Micro Update 1, build 3010, Sunday, 9th October, 2022
- Patches the auto updater so that it will continue to function after the houseoffireseed.ml domain is shut down.
- Replaces references to houseoffireseed.ml with references to the newly registered seedy.gq.
- Fixes a small typo in the about prompt, accessible from the main menu.
Please note: this version is now the minimum version that is required in order to receive automatic updates in the future. After houseoffireseed.ml is shut down, all older versions of Theseus2000 will no longer be able to auto update, thereby requiring a manual download in order to update to the highest version. To find out more about the death of houseoffireseed.ml, visit https://www.seedy.gq/announcements/dying.php.
V 3C, build 3009, Thursday, 22nd September, 2022
Speed testing works once again, and T2000 finally feels comfortable enough to tell you about itself.
- An about Theseus2000 option, which displays details about the version of T2000 you're currently running, has been added to the main menu. Access this option by pressing the letter A.
- When you run the find and delete log/session files function in the main menu, a warning/confirmation prompt will now be shown, asking if you really want to delete these files, since you probably won't be able to recover them after they're deleted. To confirm that this is really what you want to do, press Y. Otherwise, press N.
- IP Geo now has the power to open the website of the internet service provider or hosting company that an IP address is associated with, right in your default web browser!
- The speedtest-cli library has been upgraded from version 2.1.3 to version 2.1.4b1.
- HTTPS will now be used instead of HTTP when communicating with speedtest.net's main servers. This not only makes the communication between Theseus2000 and the speedtest.net servers more secure, it also fixes a frequently occurring issue that has recently arisen with the speedtest-cli library in which an HTTP 403 forbidden error will be thrown when it tries to establish a connection to the servers. This problem affects all programs that use the speedtest-cli API, as well as the speedtest-cli library itself.
V 3B (Paper Anniversary Release), build 3005, Sunday, 4th September, 2022
IP Geo actually works properly this time, and the Golden IP retriever got some serious exercise.
- IP Geo is now powered by a much better, more reliable cloud API. This should prevent any more unicode related errors being thrown. These errors would, more often than not, crash the entire program.
- The Golden IP Retriever tool is now a hell of a lot faster, and should now work fine behind an HTTPS proxy server.
V 3, build 3000, Thursday, 21st July, 2022
2 new features, improved exception handling (again), and a file deletion feature that works for once!
- A new tool has been added which will allow you to see your router's IP address, also known as your default gateway address, because 192.168.1.1 isn't standard.
- You can now directly exit Theseus2000 from any program menu, without having to press Q a bunch of times to go back to the main menu first.
- Speed test logs written to a text file will now show information about the test server that was used, including hostname/URL, longitude, latitude and hosting provider.
- Theseus2000's title bar will now dynamically change to reflect the current menu/tool you are in.
- The log file deletion feature in the main menu actually works now. You no longer have to run it a thousand times for it to get rid of all those logs; just one swoop is all it needs now!
- In cases where the Golden IP Retriever tool fails to run IP Geo after retrieving your public IP, it'll now do the right thing and show an error rather than crashing the program with an unbound local error.
V 2, build 2000, Friday, 15th July, 2022
Rewired, rewritten, rebuilt, and beefed up to infinity!
- Theseus2000's menu system has been completely rewritten. Now, instead of using numbers to navigate menu items, each menu item can simply be accessed by typing the first letter of its name. For instance, T for Tools, S for Settings etc. The Q key will always be the back button, I.E. for returning to previous menus and quitting the program itself. The letter B was intentionally not chosen to avoid confusion for those who use screen readers and find it hard to distinguish between similar sounding letters, like D and B.
- The program will no longer crash when trying to display IP Geo data for certain countries/regions. This crash was caused by an unhandled unicode encoding error. However, the IP Geo data should now display correctly for your country once again!
- The program will no longer crash if you try to run IP Geo on your local IP address. Why you'd want to do this in the first place, I have no idea, but to each their own I guess. On a related note, those who are weird enough to IP Geo 127.0.0.1, AKA localhost, will see a little joke flash up on screen. I wonder who's geeky enough to get it? :)
- An issue where no errors would be logged if the Golden IP Retriever tool failed to find your public IP address has been resolved.
- All log files generated by Theseus2000, including error logs, IP Geo data, WHOIS information and speed test logs, will now show the precise date and time of each session, including weekday, hour, and minute. This is a change from the year/month/day format of previous versions, allowing you to better distinguish between sessions that happened at different times throughout the day or on different days. Because of this format change, to avoid inconsistencies, it is highly advised that you run the new find and delete log files feature in the main menu when you first launch this new version.
- An option to view the error log in your default text editor has been added to the main menu. This option can be accessed by pressing E.
- As stated above, there is now an option to have Theseus2000 find and remove all log/session files, such as Speed test logs, IP Geo data, error logs and any other file(s) generated from Theseus2000 sessions. The feature can be accessed by pressing F in the main menu.
V 1.3D, build 1315, Sunday, 26th June, 2022
Goodbye, json! We won't miss you!
- The output from the IPGeo tool has had a serious tidy up. No more of that horrible one-line json formatted crap! Now, each piece of information generated by IPGeo is on its own line, presented in a much friendlier, cleaner format.
- The speed test tool will now tell you approximately how long download and upload tests took to complete.
- A long-standing issue where certain outputs would not be sent to braille displays in speech output mode has been resolved.
V 1.3C, build 1310, Thursday, 16th June, 2022
Reduced privileges for a (hopefully) better experience!
- The Dead or Alive tool has been rewritten, and its functionality slightly changed. Now, instead of pinging a server to see if it is up, the tool will try to make a TCP connection to the server on a port that you specify. If the connection succeeds, the server is seen to be alive. If not, you will get an SSD (server seems down) message, telling you that the connection timed out and was unsuccessful.
- Because of the changes to the Dead or Alive feature, Theseus2000 no longer requires admin privileges to run under versions of Windows higher than XP!
- A small quirk where the default Windows sound would be played alongside the actual UI sound when you pressed n in the WHOIS tool's retry prompt has been fixed.
V 1.3B, build 1305, Saturday, 11th June, 2022
The moral of the story? Test your software more. Or, don't code in the early hours of the morning.
- A bug where the program would hard crash if you either disabled or enabled UI sounds in the settings menu has been fixed.
- A bug where the program would hard crash if you pressed the wrong key and triggered the outside valid range error in the settings menu has been fixed.
V 1.3, build 1300, Saturday, 11th June, 2022
More speed, less update checking... at startup!
- Theseus2000 will no longer check for updates on startup. Due to the type of user interface the program has, this was just too slow and impractical. You had to literally wait for the program to finish checking for updates before it started up. On the upside, however, T2000 will now start up a hell of a lot faster!
- To make up for the lack of update checking at startup, an option has been added into the main menu to check for updates. You can access this option by pressing 5.
- A bug where T2000 wouldn't close the log file after writing an error log in certain cases, such as being unable to authorize your Twitter account, has been fixed.
- A bug that prevented a UI sound from playing when you returned to the main menu from the settings menu has been fixed.
- Settings are now automatically applied when you change them, so there's no longer any need for a dedicated save settings option. Because of this, the apply settings option in the settings menu has been removed, bringing the number of options down from 9 to 8.
V 1.2C, build 1210, Friday, 18th March, 2022
The hills are alive with the sound of bug fixes!
- If UI sounds are enabled, Theseus2000 will no longer crash if a sound can't be found. Instead, depending on the event, the Windows MessageBeep API will be called, or the program will simply stay quiet. Anyhow, the exception will be logged in T2000's ErrorFile.log file, located in the program's install directory or whatever working directory the program is launched from (I'm looking right at you, WinGet package manager)!
- Choosing to visit the developer's website from the main menu and returning to the main menu from the settings menu without saving your changes will now trigger a UI sound as intended.
- More Windows XP-related automatic updater bugs have been destroyed, including one where the updater couldn't find the update file after downloading it, ultimately resulting in the entire program keeling over and dying because it tried to open a file that didn't even exist! Embarrassment kills! You can prevent it! Also, the auto updater now knows the correct place to look for when removing updates that have already been applied. While this bug wouldn't cause T2000 to collapse in a heap on the ground, it would leave the unpleasant smell of a used, unneeded installer file behind.
V 1.2B, build 1205, Saturday, 12th March, 2022
- You now have the power to exit out of the D2I, Who is this? and Dead or Alive tools as soon as you enter them, just by entering 0 into the input prompt. For instance, if you wanted the speed test tool but you accidentally launched the D2I tool, typing 0 into the D2I input prompt and pressing enter will return you to the tools menu.
- The program developer now shows in the title bar alongside the version number.
- On Windows XP, the auto updater will no longer try to download to a non-existent file path and promptly crash the entire program.
V 1.2, build 1200, Wednesday, 16th February, 2022
- A new tool, called IP Geo, has been added to Theseus2000. This allows you to get geolocation data for any public IP address.
- Tools that support exporting data to text files will now save these files to the documents folder, rather than the desktop.
- The Host Resolve tool has been renamed to D2I, short for Domain to IP.
- Old theseus2000.ml references have been removed and replaced with references to https://www.houseoffireseed.ml/programs/theseus.
- Files will now be written as continuous logs, rather than an entirely new file being created every time a user opts to write data to a file.
V 1.1, build 1100, Saturday, 20th November, 2021
- The program will no longer crash if the speed test tool can't find a test server to run a test from.
- 2 new UI sounds have been added. One for when the program is trying to find and connect to a speed test server, and the other for when the speed test has started.
- The item select sound has changed.
- The startup sound has been reverted back to the much shorter pre-1.06 sound.
- The automatic updater has been reconfigured. It will now use Fireseed's Upside service to check for and apply updates. The old Github-based updater will continue to work for a short time for convenience, but this version, and all subsequent versions, will use the Upside service. Due to the way the old updater was written, you will not be able to use older (1.0x) versions of Theseus2000 after the Github repository is shut down, and the latest version will require a manual download.
V 1.06, build 1060, Friday, 8th October, 2021
- The program has brand new startup and shutdown sounds!
- The program will no longer crash if the speed test library fails to initialize.
- A small typo in the automatic updater has been fixed.
V 1.05, build 1050, Tuesday, 5th October, 2021
- A new sound has been added for certain actions, such as a completed speed test or a successful Twitter account authorization.
- Helpful startup prompts have been added, so you know exactly what Theseus2000 is doing as it fires up.
- A bug that killed the program's text output when a user reset their settings back to default has been fixed. The program would still work, but there would be no text output whatsoever, regardless of output mode; the screen would just be completely blank.
V 1.01, build 1001, Friday, 17th September, 2021
- Programs crash because they don't know how to handle errors. This minor update fixes this exact issue in Theseus2000. The program will no longer crash and die when it runs into an error. Instead, a friendly error message will be shown, the error will be logged and stored in the ErrorFile.log file located inside the main program folder, and Theseus2000 will keep running! Isn't error handling a beautiful thing?
- This update also resolves an issue with the automatic updater where it would only download a small piece of the installer file (14 bytes). On 64-bit systems, this would cause a "this app can't run on your PC" error when the installer was launched. On 32-bit systems, however, the Windows NT Virtual DOS Machine (NTVDM) would simply commit suicide and the installer wouldn't launch at all.
V 1, build 1000, Friday, 10th September, 2021
